The Shivering Mountain - 30.11.19

As I have not made a good showing at any of the other events and the forecast was for bright sunshine on Saturday I decided to put a shift of training in from Castleton to Mam Tor, on to Hollins Cross and Lose Hill, and back to Castleton on Saturday.

The Shivering Mountain is described as "an exhilarating 6.5 mile walk with the option to extend to 8 miles. It includes one of the best ridge walks in the country with superb views of the Edale and Hope Valleys and the edge of Kinder Scout".

As you can see the bright sunshine was hidden by the low clouds and it was freezing. Nevertheless the walk went well. The pace was slower than me and Forest are used to but Andy Bell the mountain man says it is time on your feet rather than speed which is important at this stage.

The navigation was easy. In fact it was like a motorway up there at times. We set off at 10:30 am, had a packed lunch half way round, which resulted in frozen white finger as gloves were temporarily removed, and we were back in the pub for half past three.

The descent was very tricky as it was extremely slippery and muddy. The mother and son dream team who joined me in this training event fell spectacularly and wore the mud to prove it with pride.

Overall a great day which may or may not have improved my chances of completing the 3 Peaks Challenge. But I still have time for more hard core training between now and June. Bring it on!
