Clawing our way back from Lockdown

After a brilliant 13-mile upland walk around Derwent on the 14th March, spirits were high but there was an increasing sense of foreboding and a fear that the training walk around the Yorkshire  3 Peaks was in jeopardy. Little did we know at that stage that the whole of our 3 Peak Challenge for 2020 would circum to the global pandemic and international lockdown.

Our work went online and the team no longer had face to face contact. The Whatsapp group set up to organise our training events became a forum to share uplifting memes and (mainly football-related) quizzes to try to stay connected, keep everyone's spirits up and look after our mental health. Weeks became months and we all obediently stayed at home. Henry kept us entertained by shaving his hair off and raising cash for our cause.

We saw milestones come and go as our planned training events were cancelled one by one. Then the 24th June came around. It was a very reflective 24 hours. We’d be on the bus now, we’d be on Ben Nevis now, I wonder how I would be feeling at this stage, we should be flying down Snowden now…. and thinking about our loved ones, cancer survivors and people who we have lost to cancer who had inspired us to take on this challenge in the first place.  But sadly it wasn’t to be.

By the end of June, we felt that restrictions were lifting sufficiently for us to have an online planning meeting and as a result, it was agreed that the 3 Peak Challenge lives on, we will reschedule for next year and our first walk was scheduled for July the 1st.

The Redmires Loop - Groups of 6 only

July 10th - The High Bradfield Loop including our first pint in the pub.

July 22nd An afternoon hike from the Norfolk Arms Ringinglow

We want to keep it up now and pick up the pace from here. Onwards and Upwards from here.
