Mission over the Marshland

There were dogs aplenty as we set off from The Stines Inn under beautiful blue skies on March 11th. One of us at least underestimated the chill in the air and the brisk wind, choosing shorts, a lightweight top, a guillet AND NO HAT as their hiking gear of choice. The level of preparation and kit among the team varied wildly, but Henry, our leader, had his reassuringly large backpack with all things spare and safety in it. Others were heard to comment, ‘hiking boots ….. what are they’. What a rookie error!

Without further ado, we ventured out. The chatter was cheerful, and the walking pace was brisk as we headed up to the  Strines Edge Trig point. From this high point, we could see magnificent views and landmarks for miles around. Henry and I picked out Emley Moor Mast, at least 20 miles away in West Yorkshire,  whilst Leanne admired her dog.

As we proceeded along the edge, the skies were spectacular,  the mud, however, was somewhat challenging, but we were undeterred.  At the salt cellar rock formation, we boldly followed Amy’s compass bearing,  through knee-high scratchy heather and across the virgin moorland, and past the grouse shooting hides. With pinpoint accuracy, we were guided straight back to our starting point. As the sun set behind us, we headed into the pub for a swift half and a debrief before heading home in time for tea. A highly successful training walk was completed and thoroughly enjoyed.
